Foo Fighters are a band that was founded by frontman Dave Grohl after Nirvana ended following the death of lead singer Kurt Cobain. The name “Foo Fighters” was derived from a World War II term for the UFOs and other aerial sightings reported by the Allied pilots. The aerial objects were called the “foo fighters,” and Grohl’s fascination with UFOs inspired the name. After Nirvana broke up, Grohl was encouraged to play the drums for other extremely successful bands including Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Pearl Jam. However, Grohl decided to begin to record his own music, and on the debut, self-titled album, Grohl was the only official member of the Foo Fighters. The album dropped in 1995. Foo Fighters have consistently released music since their debut album – the greatest album gap being three years.
