About Army West Point Athletics
Army West Point Athletics are in conjunction with Army West Point, a U.S. Military Academy that educates and trains its students. Each student is required to participate in intercollegiate, club or intramural sports each semester. This aligns with Army West Point’s mission of physical excellence and preparedness.
Army West Point Athletics are known as the Black Knights. However, their longtime mascot is the mule. The school’s colors are black, gold, and grey. Army plays in Division I-A athletics and has deep rivalries with fellow service academies like Air Force and Navy. Every year, the three academies compete in football for the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy. The Army-Navy football game is one of the most historical and most popular rivalries in college athletics.
The athletics teams play on-campus in West Point, New York. The Army West Point Black Knights football team is unique, as they have mostly competed as an independent. This means the team is not affiliated with a conference. However, Army West Point Athletics primarily compete in the Patriot League. Three Army football players have won the Heisman Trophy.
Two notable college basketball coaches began their careers at Army. Bob Knight, the former Indiana basketball head coach and one of the most successful coaches of all time, began at Army in the late ‘60s. Mike “Coach K” Krzyzewski, current head coach at Duke, also began at Army and is currently the most successful coach in men’s basketball. However, the Army men’s basketball team has never made it to the NCAA tournament. This is partially due to height and academic requirements for the school.
In regards to hockey, Army West Point Athletics holds one of the most historical annual international sporting events against the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) Paladins. They play in the Atlantic Hockey division and won a conference championship during the 2007-2008 season. The team has been established for over one hundred years.
